How to Get the Most from Your Broadband ISP
If you have a broadband ISP you enjoy the convenience of being able to surf the Internet without tying up your phone line. With a broadband ISP service you also have higher speed internet access. To make your broadband ISP service even more powerful, however, there are a number of thinks you can do:1) Choose to do your internet browsing at off-peak hours. When you sign up with a broadband ISP, you get fast internet access. However, the speed of your internet connection will vary throughout the day as more or less people are online. By noticing when your broadband is slower, you can learn to use your service at slower times for peak performance. When you have larger files to download, you can choose to surf at off-peak hours, even though you can still use your broadband at any time convenient for you. When you are not using the broadband internet service, you should sign off so that you are not slowing down other users' connection.2) Install filters on your phone lines. Your broadband ISP likely provided you with an ADSL modem and phone filters when you signed up for internet service. It is important that you place these filters on your phone lines in the manner your broadband ISP directs, as these filters will make your phone and your internet work more effectively.3) Use short phone cords. Extension or extra-long phone cords from a phone jack to the modem your broadband ISP provided can hamper how well your phone lines and modem work. Place your computer near a phone jack so that you can connect your modem and phone line without using too long cords.4) Keep your phone lines in good shape. Replace damaged or stretched phone lines to keep your internet service and phones working properly.5) Select the right contention. Contention refers to the number of other users who use the same broadband as you on a broadband ISP service. This number can either be 50:1 (meaning that 49 other people use the same broadband) or 20:1. If possible, select a lower connection so that there is less traffic to slow down the broadband ISP service.
